About Up 'n' Cumming Swimmers
Nancy Horton as Swim Instructor for Up 'n' Cumming Swimmers LLC
Experience; Teaching swimming since 1972 and swim coach since 1976
I grew up in Miami, Florida where I was an AAU (now USA) age group swimmer and water polo player. I started on the Hialeah Swim Team in 1968 I moved to North Dade YMCA when my Coach moved there to start his own new program. I also swam and played for Miami Central my 10th grade year and then my alma mater Hialeah Miami Lakes High School
1973-1975. I moved to Georgia when I was recruited to swim for Brenau College in Gainesville GA. I live in Cumming GA now, and have been here since 1977.
I started teaching swim lessons at the North Dade YMCA in Miami FL in 1972 and started Coaching while in college for the Gainesville Swim Team which is now called Lanier Aquatics. I have coached USA Swimming for Lanier Aquatics and Swim Atlanta. I also coached the Cumming Waves 1979 to 1999, where we gained the title of Champions of our League. I thought I retired only to be persuaded by swimmers and parents to start over at Grove Park, and then Dawsonville Racers. Now I have retired from coaching again. I am still in the water; I am currently teaching swim lessons for ages 6 months to senior’s citizens. I teach all levels, from beginner swimmers to refining competitive swimmers' stokes. My swim lessons are currently taught at Hearthstone Lodge Senior Center, 7305 Lanier Drive, Cumming GA and Essential Therapy 433 Canton Road, Suite 211 Cumming GA
When asked why I teach, I tease “I love making children cry”. They cry when the parents put them in the swimming pool with me, and once I teach them, they cry when they have to get out of the pool. There is nothing better than taking a child that is afraid of the water to watching them have so much fun while learning to swim. Many of my swimmers have gone on to be great competitive swimmers. I have also had many of my students come back with their own children for swim lessons. I say I am waiting to teach the grandchildren of my original students that I have taught to swim here in Cumming before I can retire from being a Swim Instructor.
I enjoy sharing my love for the water with all ages, and preparing kids to experience competitive swimming for themselves. I am so thankful for my swimming experiences and what it has given me; mental agility, physical health and lifelong friendships.
